The Japanese Society of Hypertension recommends the following methods and conditions for home blood pressure measurement:
Measurement Environment
1. Quiet room at appropriate temperature
2. Sit in a chair with back support, feet on the floor, without crossing legs
3. Maintain posture and avoid conversation during measurement
4. Avoid smoking, alcohol consumption, and caffeine intake before measurement
5. Environment where cuff position can be maintained at heart level
Measurement Timing
1. Essential timing and conditions
a) Morning (within 1 hour of waking, after urination, before morning medication, before breakfast, after sitting quietly for 1-2 minutes)
b) Evening (before bedtime, after sitting quietly for 1-2 minutes)
2. Additional timing
a) As instructed: evening, before medication, before bathing, before drinking alcohol, during nighttime sleep, etc.
b) Other times: when experiencing symptoms, weekend afternoons, etc., as appropriate
Number of Measurements and Handling
• Take 2 measurements per session in principle and use the average value
• If only 1 measurement is taken per session, use that value as the blood pressure reading for that session
